Newly crowned Dunlop National Rally champions, Donegal cousins, Declan and Brian Boyle (Subaru WRC) are the top seeds for Sunday’s penultimate round of the national series, the Carlton Shearwater Galway Summer Rally.
A year ago, the pair gave their ex-Tim McNulty Subaru S12B a winning debut on the Galway Summer Rally. Some twelve months later, they return to County Galway as Dunlop champions having netted five wins in the six rounds to date.
They will be favourites to clinch victory and take their winning points total to the maximum 120 points. Last week, they retired from the Ulster Rally with turbo associated problems on the opening stage.
Although the Boyles have won the Vard Memorial Trophy, there are several awards still to be decided within the popular Dunlop series. Runner-up spot in the championship rests between Welsh ace, James Belton, Clonmel’s, Roy White and Monaghan brothers, Josh and Sam Moffett.
The top ten start list also includes the aforementioned Roy White, former Group N champion, Alan Ring (Mitsubishi EvoIX) along with Josh Moffett (Mitsubishi EvoIX) and Declan Gallagher (Toyota Starlet).
Elsewhere, the capacity entry also includes the Mk. 2 Ford Escorts of Rodney Wilton, Ed O’Callaghan, Tom Flaherty and Russell Woods. Monaghan’s, Maurice Moffett (Toyota Starlet) along with Ford Escort pair, Mike Quinn and Ed Synan are all in the modified category. The Galway top twenty also features the Toyota Corolla WRC of Eddie Power.
Ulster rally winner, Garry Jennings, will drive a MK2 Ford Escort, he is seeded at 24 and will be co-driven by Marie Melia, who won the opportunity to co-drive the Kesh driver in a raffle that raised funds for the Galway Parkinsons Association.
The ceremonial start takes place in Ballinasloe Square at 8.00pm on Saturday evening.
