Naomh Columba will host the fourth annual Darren Mc Ginley Memorial Tournament on Saturday, June 29th. The competition was set up in memory of the young Southwest clubman, who passed away tragically in December 2006. Darren was immersed in the club at all levels, and was heavily involved with the underage and ladies teams in particular. His enthusiasm for the sport and his dedication to the club was exemplary, and, coupled with his fantastic humour and fun-loving personality, he really captured the ethos of the organisation at grass roots level.
The tournament takes the form of a ladies seven-a-side competition, in recognition of Darren’s involvement with this section of the club. This year’s event sees teams travelling from within and outside the county, with representation from Naomh Conaill, Naomh Náille, Na Cealla Beaga, Cill Chartha, and St Theresa’s from Loughmacrory in County Tyrone. The home side will enter two teams in the contest. The tournament includes a Cup and Shield (A & B) competition. Naomh Conaill took home the cup last year, after a phenomenal display throughout, while the shield made the trip to Fintragh and the Killybeg’s trophy cabinet.
All participating teams are required to be at the clubhouse before 10.30am on the morning of the competition, so that the draw can take place. Games are scheduled to start promptly at 11.00am. A large crowd is expected at Páirc na nGael for the event, which has proven very popular since it’s inauguration in 2010. Local people are once again reminded that home baked goods would be much appreciated on the day, and can be left in the clubrooms from early morning!
