Letterkenny Rovers caused a surprise as they came from behind to defeat Dundalk and record a first victory in this season’s Airtricity U-19 League.
On a beautiful autumnal day at Leckview Park, a well deserved victory moved Anthony Gorman’s side off the bottom of the table and above Fanad United.
The Letterkenny outfit had to wait five games to register their first win of the campaign but the second half goals from Jason Doherty and Simon McGlynn – on his U-19 debut – made it a success to savour.
There was little to choose between the sides in the opening half but a moment of improvisation midway through it gave Dundalk the edge.
A short free-kick from Kevin Nolan was met by the diagonal run from George Poynton and their leading goal scorer coolly dispatched his effort beyond the advancing Jason Quinn in the Rovers’ goal.
However, two goals in the space of seven second half minutes turned the contest dramatically on its’ head.
Shane Porter hit a long diagonal pass out of the defence to release Jason Doherty on the left wing. His darting run took him beyond two Dundalk defenders before rounding the goalkeeper Ryan Davies and sliding the ball into the net from a tight angle.
Moments later, Doherty then produced a tremendous finger tip save from Davies with a stinging 25 yard effort.
The home side had their tails up and the lead goal – which proved to be the winner – came on 65 minutes.
A long throw-in from Noah Mailey was flicked on by the industrious Jack Blake and Simon McGlynn crept in at the near post to toe the ball home into the net much to the delight of the sizeable support on that side of the pitch.
