Donal O’Brien and Trevor Scanlon take their Ulster Senior League squad to Sligo for the weekend’s FAI Interprovincial tournament.

The group have trained together three times and also had a 3-2 win over Finn Harps in a friendly earlier this month.

Darren McElwaine gave the USL the lead before goals from Paul McVeigh and Jordan Duffy gave Harps a 2-1 lead.

Gerry Gill and Garbhan Friel’s goals sealed the win.

O’Brien is happy with the preparations that his squad have put in and this week added William O’Connor of Cockhill Celtic and Shane McGinty from Finn Harps to the travelling party.

McGinty is allowed to field as he has only played twice for Harps in the Airtricity League First Divison and will not be going to Wexford with the club on Friday night. Darren Cassidy is unavailable due to work commitments.

“We’re looking good and we’re happy with the squad and how we have prepared,” O’Brien said this week.

“We’ve put together a squad that can play football but one that are also physically strong.

“It’s hard to know an awful lot about the opposition in these representative competitions but we’re happy where we’re at. There’s a good bunch in place there.

“We intend to use the whole squad over the course of the three games as they come thick and fast.

“We’ve a smaller pick that the other provinces but that can work to your advantage as well. The competition is also taking place in Sligo, which is here in the north-west, so we don’t have too far to go.

O’Brien, in the last fortnight, has taken his Cockhill side to the League Cup and Ulster Senior League double.

The USL squad begin their campaign on the Friday night with a game against the Leinster Senior League with the teams playing out an entertaining 5-5 draw in last year’s tournament.

They will then take on their Connacht counterparts on Saturday afternoon before finishing their weekend with a game against holders Munster on Sunday morning .
