Gary Merritt and Michéal Doherty have both requested transfers away from Finn Harps and are to join clubs in the Donegal League.
Their departures come as Harps prepare for tomorrow night’s trip to play Wexford Youths in the Airtricity League First Division.
Merritt will resign for Milford United and Doherty is thought to be signing for Drumoghill FC.
Neither Merritt nor Doherty have managed to hold down a regular place in the side this season but ironically, both would have started in Wexford tomorrow night.
Harps will be without three key players because of suspension - Kevin McHugh, Ciaran Coll and Michael Funston. Add in the injury problems in the camp and Harps boss, Peter Hutton will be without several regulars for this weekend.
He has described the decision of the two players to move to the Donegal League as “unfortunate”. “But that’s the way it is,” he said. “The two lads have obviously decided to pass up on the chance to feature between now and the end of the season and have decided to go back into the Donegal League.
“The thing about it is, they would have both been starting on Friday night.”
On the plus side, Hutton will have Damien McNulty available again after he sat out Friday night’s defeat against Mervue United following his sending off in Drogheda.
Tomorrow night’s game will be the fifth meeting between the two clubs this season. In the three league games to date, they have drawn once and won one game each. They also met in the FAI Cup 2nd round back in May with Harps winning 2-1.
“They’ve gone through a few changes in personnel over the season - a bit like ourselves,” Hutton said.
“But they’re a decent side, probably one of the best footballing teams in this division. The fact that they’ve got such a good pitch at their pitch means you’re almost guaranteed an open game.”
