Stephen McLaughlin came off the bench on this league debut for Bristol City to set up his side’s equaliser against Colchester United on Saturday.

Sam Baldock’s fifth goal of the season on 74 minutes handed Bristol City a 1-1 draw following a cross by the former Finn Harps winger, who had come on eight minutes beforehand.

Matthew Taylor gave Colchester a first-half lead against the run of play when he headed in Luke Garbutt’s cross from the left.

McLaughlin, on loan until the end of the season from Nottingham Forest, made his first appearance for the club in Tuesday’s 2-0 loss against Southampton in the Capital One Cup.

The draw means that Bristol City are 19th in the 24-team League One, with five points from nine fixtures this season.

Next up is a trip to Port Vale this coming Saturday.

McLaughlin, who is from the Doagh Island, Ballyliffin, joined Forest from Derry City in January for £160,000.

The 23-year-old played for Clonmany Shamrocks before spending the 2009 and 2010 seasons at Finn Park.

In his two-year tenure at Derry City, McLaughlin helped the club to the 2012 FAI Cup.
