Coleman: ‘We can’t afford a slip-up against the Faroes’

Seamus Coleman is expected to earn his 13th Republic of Ireland senior cap against the Faroe Islands on Friday night at the Aviva Stadium.

The 24-year-old finished the Premier League season in excellent form for Everton and was man of the match as Ireland drew 1-1 with England at Wembley in an international friendly last week.

Runaway leaders Germany have 16 points in World Cup Qualifying Group C, while Ireland, Sweden and Austria are all tied on eight points in joint-second.

However, Sweden have a game in hand but have a potentially tricky trip to Vienna on Friday before they welcome the Faroes to the Friends Arena in Stockholm on Tueday.

Ireland drew 0-0 with Sweden in March before drawing 2-2 at home to Austria in a match when Bayern Munich’s David Alaba scored a 93rd minute equaliser.

“We have had a couple of good results now against Sweden and now England, and that gives us a bit of confidence,” Coleman said. “We are not looking any further than the Faroe Islands, to be honest because we can’t afford to slip up.”
