St Eunan’s had three points to spare over Kilcar in Towney as the Letterkenny side leapfrogged the locals to go back on top of the All-County Football League.
St Eunan’s 2-8
However, the result will have been overshadowed for Kilcar supporters of the disappointing site of seeing Stephen McBrearty structured off before half-time. The county minor had been out for six months with a knee cartilage injury and only returned to action last month.
St Eunan’s started well and moved into a 1-3 to 0-1 lead by the 12th minute with Kieran Sharkey goaling after points from Conall Dunne and Mark McGowan’s brace. Michael Hegarty opened the hosts’ account.
However, a goal from Barry Doherty and a point from McBrearty on 23, six minutes before his withdrawal and his first ever score as a senior, meant St Eunan’s led by one at the break - 1-3 to 1-2.
Kilcar edged ahead at the start of the second half, 2-3 to 1-3, with Doherty scoring a 35th minute goal - his seventh of the season - and Ciaran McGinley knocking over a point. But Eunan’s refused to lie down and Donnacha Gallagher and Dunne posted scores before Lee McMonagle’s goal on 48. Sharkey, Sean Hensey and Patrick Rafferty put over late scores with Kilcar’s only points in the final quarter coming from the boot of Hegarty.
