Stranorlar boxer Jason Quigley did Donegal proud as he has won European gold, defeating Romanian Bogdan Juratoni in the final in Minsk, Belarus.
The rising star from the Finn Valley Boxing Club has now accounted for the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds on his way to gold, as he defeated the top seed Ievgen Khytrove of the Ukraine in the semi-final on Friday.
The 22-year-old paved the way for his success with a block buster of an opening round in which he won on all three judges, building a lead of 30-27 which was enough to put him on the road to victory.
While he lost the second round 29-28, he came back to seal victory in the final round, winning 29-28.
Amazingly, it is his 24th senior win in-a-row. Quigley defeated Olympian Darren O’Neill to win the Irish Elite title.
He was part of a great Irish success story at the championships. John Joe Nevin also won gold in impressive style while Belfast pair of Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan had to be content with silver. Barnes was extremely lucky as he was forced to give his opponent a walkover as a broken nose saw him unable to take his place in the final.
