Larissa Muldoon from Ballybofey and Nora Stapleton, Fahan, are proud holders of Six Nations Rugby Grand Slam medals after they helped Ireland defeat Italy in the final match of the campaign.

In atrocious conditions, Ireland had just three points to spare as they squeezed out a 6-3 victory with two penalties from full-back Niamh Briggs.

In a nailbiting finish, it was Larissa Muldoon who had the final kick, finding touch just before the final whistle by the referee.

It has been a great campaign for the Irish team and for the two Donegal girls who have held down the pivotal positions of scrum half and outhalf respectively.

Both Muldoon and Stapleton were central to the victory over Italy as they needed to keep the game tight because of the conditions.

The final whistle set off wild celebrations and no doubt those celebrations will continue and hopefully the Grand Slam trophy will make a visit to Donegal in the coming months.n
