Donegal manager Jim McGuinness is most definitely going to give youth a fling when the new football season throws-in next week, with the Dr. McKenna Cup.
The Donegal boss has named up to seven new faces to senior football in the 20 man panel that he has submitted to the Ulster Council.
Kevin McFadden, Cloughan-eely; Ciaran Cannon, Letterkenny Gaels; Caolan Ward, St. Eunan’s; Shaun McGarvey, Cloughaneely; Willie Gillespie, Naomh Colmcille; Pauric Carr, Kilcar and Leon Kelly, Glenswilly are all being given their opportunity by McGuinness, with the bulk of the 20 names furnished to the provincial body drawn from this season’s county U-21 squad.
While McGuinness has still to add six more names to the squad before the start of the competition, Thomas McKinley, Gary McFadden, Marty Boyle, Daniel McLaughlin, Stephen Griffin, Dermot ‘Brick’ Molloy, Adrian Hanlon, Michael Boyle and Paul Durcan are the only members of the All-Ireland winning squad in the panel named for McKenna Cup action.
Others who have been part of the panel in the past such as Peter Boyle, Mark McGowan and Luke Keaney along with Gaoth Dobhair’s Odhran MacNiallais - who featured in last November’s Match for Michaela - are also being given the opportunity to stake a claim for inclusion in 2013.
Donegal are in Group A along with St Mary’s College, Fermanagh, and Monaghan. They begin their campaign on Wednesday night nwxt away to Fermanagh in Brewster Park, throw-in 7.30 pm.
This game was originally fixed for Sunday next January 6th but was put back until Wednesday night due to Donegal’s holiday in Dubai.
Donegal are then home to Monaghan in Ballybofey, on Sunday week, January 13th and they wrap up the opening series on the following Wednesday night, also at home to St. Mary’s College.
Meanwhile, the Ulster Council once again are offering supporters special Dr. McKenna Cup season tickets.
The limited edition tickets are priced at €25/£20 and are to cover the three games plus the semi-final and final with a potential saving of 60% for those supporters whose teams make it all the way to the final.
