Shane Duffy wore the captain’s armband for the first time and Carl McHugh was a second half debutant as the Republic of Ireland U-21 enjoyed a fine 3-0 win over Holland and Tallaght Stadium this afternoon.

Millwall’s Aiden O’Brien grabbed a brace and a penalty from Anthony Forde of Wolverhampton Wanderers sealed the win. Everton defender Duffy is a native of Derry and his father Brian is from Letterkenny, while Lettermacaward’s McHugh is part of the Bradford City side on their way to Wembley for the Capital One League Cup final. The 20-year-old replaced Sean McGinty of Manchester United at the break.

Manager Noel King has set his sights on the 2013-15 Uefa Championships qualifying campaign. Ireland have been drawn alongside Germany, Romania, Montenegro and the Faroe Islands in the Uefa qualifiers and will be encouraged by their result yesterday against the Dutch.
