Letterkenny native Ryan McConnell was part of the Republic of Ireland U-19 side that defeated the Czech Republic by two goals to one at Flancare Park in Longford on Tuesday night.

Letterkenny native Ryan McConnell was part of the Republic of Ireland U-19 side that defeated the Czech Republic by two goals to one at Flancare Park in Longford on Tuesday night.

The 18-year-old, who is on the books of Manchester United, played right-back for the Paul Doolin managed side in the international friendly.

St Patrick’s Athletic midfielder Ryan Coombes opened the scoring in the 27th minute when forced the ball home from six-yards out after connecting with a low cross by Paul George from the left.

Mikey Drennan had another shot saved by Josef Rehák in the 39th minute as the Irish pressed for a second and 60 seconds later they did extend their lead when Coombes fed Drennan and his brilliant cross was headed home by Kenneth McEvoy at the back post.

Ireland suffered a blow when the visitors pulled one back in the 52nd minute. František Liška’s penalty was saved by Ian Lawlor but Liška forced home the rebound.

The two sides will meet again in another friendly at Athlone Town Stadium on Thursday night, kick-off 7.30pm.
