Shay Given has vowed to do everything in his power to reclaim his starting place with Aston Villa.
The Lifford native started the new season under Paul Lambert between the sticks but lost his place in the side to American Brad Guzan in September after his side’s 3-1 loss at Everton’s hands in the Premier League.
Thirty-six-year-old Given, who announced his retirement after 125 caps from international football after Euro 2012 will continue to work hard at training for the midlands club.
“Frustration can sometimes boil over when you’re not playing, but for me it’s important that I keep my head down and work hard and please God my chance comes round again,” he said.
“I am gutted that I am not playing in the team, that’s natural, and hopefully if I work hard I’ll get back in the side.”
