After a lacklustre first half Ireland took the lead immediately after the restart with Mark Wilson finding the top corner with a magnificent strike.
Ireland added a second through a great header from Jonathon Walters on 53 minutes.
The Faroes pulled a goal back through substitute Hansen on 68 minutes but Ireland’s two goal advantage was restored five minutes later through a Justinussen own goal.
Aiden McGeady was unlucky not to add a fourth on 86 minutes when his effort was deflected out for a corner, but from the corner Darren O’Dea made it 4-1 to the Irish.
The win takes Ireland to six points in the table, in third place behind leaders Germany and Sweden.
