Donegal U-13’s defeated Cavan/ Monaghan (CMUL) in the third round of the SFAI inter-league competition in Cootehill on Saturday.
Cavan Monaghan 1
The Donegal management handed debuts to Ryan Cunningham and Ethan Harkin and Erne Wanderers’ Dylan Gallagher returned to the squad to form a familiar partnership with Luke Gavigan in defence.
Ronan McHugh was unlucky on 15 minutes when his fine strike struck the crossbar and the game kicked into life at that stage.
CMUL broke a number of times at pace but the threat was capably dealt with by Dylan Gallagher and man of the match Luke Gavigan. When the half-time whistle came, Donegal were looking the more likely team to score.
The second half had barely started when the excellent James Carolan ran onto a quickly taken free-kick, out-sprinted the CMUL defence and scored.
Donegal doubled their advantage on 42 minutes when Ryan Cunningham pounced on a breaking ball in the box and found the roof of the CMUL net.
CMUL’s efforts were rewarded on 48 minutes with a well taken goal and with Donegal’s advantage reduced to the minimum, the game was very much in the balance.
Conor O’Donnell looked threatening for Donegal on the left wing and was causing CMUL problems on the break. A speculative shot was fumbled by the CMUL keeper and O’Donnell was sharp and clinical in netting the rebound.
Donegal’s fate will be decided next Saturday when Sligo and Inishowen meet at McGinn Park. Sligo need a win to deny Donegal a place in the next round but that won’t be easy against an excellent and determined Inishowen side.
