Malin man in the running for ‘Number One Supporter’ competition

Donegal might be in their first All-Ireland final in 20 years but they aim to retain the title of SuperValu’s Number One Real Supporter Competition.

Donegal might be in their first All-Ireland final in 20 years but they aim to retain the title of SuperValu’s Number One Real Supporter Competition.

Last year Mary ‘Football’ Breslin from Kilcar took the overall award and this summer it’s the turn of Malin’s Patrick Houton, whose daughter Jacqueline recently spotted an advert in a newspaper and decided to enter a competition to nominate her father as Ireland’s number one GAA supporter. If Patrick is successful in winning this competition he will receive €10,000 for the Malin GAA club.

The winner will be crowned by a public vote on www.supervalu.ie as Patrick faces competition from Clare’s Maurice Reidy, Patrick O’Leary from Cork and Dubliner Charlie Cleary. Patrick was joined at Croke Park by Malin colleagues John Byrne, Danny McColgan and Patrick Rustard on Friday for his interviews with Today FM, which will be broadcast on their Saturday sports show between 9am and 11am.

“I thought my father Patrick Houton would be a great candidate for this due to all the work he has done for the Malin GAA club over the past number of years,” Jacqueline said. “So I wrote up a section on why I think my father Patrick Houton is Ireland’s number one GAA supporter and sent it away.

“I thought nothing of it and a few days later I received a phone call in relation to the competition. I was told Dad had been short listed down to the final four competitors in the competition out of thousands of entries.

“This now comes down to a public vote by which dad has to get as many supporters behind him to vote for him. Voting takes place on www.supervalu.ie. We ask for as many people as possible to get behind dad and vote for him to become Ireland’s number one GAA supporter.”

“Dad has done a lot for the Malin GAA club over numerous years. He has been treasurer for the past 13years and is now currently vice treasure. He has done an abundant amount of voluntary work for the club. He is the ladies team main sponsor and is one of the main men behind the clubs lotto.

“Dad has 26 great lotto sellers from around the parish of whom he collects lottos from every Sunday morning without fail. The lotto money is the club’s main source of income and without this money Malin couldn’t function as a club. There is great excitement in the club at present and hopefully everyone will get behind Patrick and vote for the man in the blue transit van!”
