LETTERKENNY GAELS

We all enjoyed a very successful family fun day at Páirc Na nGael on Sunday last. With the glorious weather supporting the event, everyone attending made the day a huge success. All of the events were very well supported. The Barbeque and home baking was exceptional and the M.C. for the day made sure we were not missing a score in Croke Pk. The evening rounded off with a Tug-o-war competition. The interest in this event made sure that it will be a regular on the programme in the future. Thanks to the experienced Naomh Colmcille officials who refereed the Tug-o-war. The Club hosted their annual U6 hurling blitz last Saturday with almost 40 boys and girls taking part from Gaels, St. Eunans, Buncrana and Dungloe clubs. MILFORD

This weeks Lotto Numbers were 5-8-13-14. No jackpot winner. One match three get’s €70. Fergus Friel, The Lagg. Next weeks jackpot is €4,660.

Senior Men

The Seniors won last Saturday by the slimmest of margins against a young Convoy team on a scoreline of 1-9 to 13 points. Milford registered the first score of the game in the opening minutes and that would be the only time they would lead until the 55th minute. A lackluster performance in the first half allowed Convoy to sneak in for a goal midway through the second half and gave them a two point lead at halftime. The second half was a better performance as Milford’s midfield and half back line began to get on top. The last few minutes were tit for tat, Cathal McGettigan scored a great point that Milford thought wrapped up the game for them, until Convoy scored a free from beyond the 45 to level the game up again. Milford won the resultant kick out to go up the field and David Curley pointed the winning score. They now play local rivals Downings in the semi-final of the championship on Sunday. Keep an eye on the website and facebook page for details.

Ladies - Junior Championship Semi Final

Milford 1-9 Dungloe 0-6

The senior ladies qualified for the county final with a great win on Sunday against Dungloe. Playing against a very strong wind they went in at halftime 4 points down, but came out in the second half and totally dominated the game. A brilliant goal from Aisling McBride was the icing on the cake as they triumphed by 6 points. They now face a very strong St. Naul’s side in the final on Saturday. We would urge all club members to come out and support the girls in the final. This is the second final they have reached this year and they deserve to get a good crowd out to cheer them on. The final is on this Saturday 8th September at 3pm at Red Hughs ground in Killygordon.

Under 13’s

Morale boosting 8 point victory for the U13’’s last Sunday over St Eunans’s. Very impressive first outing for the boys and with so many 00 and 01 boys playing out of their age it was powerful stuff. A number of quite outstanding displays by our boys. The two men in the middle (Connor Gormley and Daire Crossan) gave commanding performances.Ronan Docherty once again was superb with Conor McHugh showing well against boys a year older.

AODH RUADH:

There will be no further information on All-Ireland ticket allocation until after Wednesday night’s county board meeting. We will notify of any updates in an addendum.

Aodh Ruadh had to settle for a share of the points after a pointed free in the seventh minute of injury time from Burt left the sides tied on 0-9 to 1-6. Martin Gallagher was influential in midfield, while Eamon McGrath also prospered at wing back and came in for a lot of over-zealous attention, which eventually saw his marker lined. Ronan Drummond had a good outing at corner back and in a game where the best performances were mainly in defence it was no surprise that Niall McCready was very effective when brought on. In the attack another sub, Diarmaid McInerney, got score of the game with a great effort in the second half score while Michael ‘Sticky’ Ward was his usual reliable self. We have a full match report and pictures up on aodhruadh.org.

Aodh Ruadh reserves had three points to spare over Burt in Hibernian park last Saturday winning on a score line of 0-6 to 0-9. Burt’s cause wasn’t helped when they lost a man 15 minutes into the game, but they battled with typical tenacity to make Aodh Ruadh work for the points. It took a good team performance. Up front Johnny Gethins weighed in with two points and Ryan Granaghan with a point. Christopher Spanny Goan also racked up the scores from wing back, but score of the game was possibly Anthony Coughlin’s massive wind assisted point which was pinged over off the left boot. Damien Cleary did very well in midfield when he came on and Kieran Keown a driving force from centre half back. Gary Carty had great stint at the heart of the defence hoovering up a lot of loose ball and Michael Ward was also very solid. That win took the Ernesiders back to the top of the table, although Naomh Columba, their main rivals for league honours, have a number of games in hand. We have pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

Aodh Ruadh’s are on the road again this weekend, this time back to Inishowen where they take on Urris on Saturday evening. The reserve game throws-in at 5.30pm, followed by the senior game at 6.45pm.

There is still no firm date for the minors’ county semi-final against Saint Eunan’s.

The under 13s went down to a heavy 1-7 to 7-16 loss against a well-drilled Bundoran outfit in Father Tierney Park last Friday. The next assignment for the team is the visit of Four Masters to Ballyshannon this Friday. Throw in for that game is 6.30pm.

The under 12s took part in PJ Treacy tournament along with Devenish, Melvin Gaels and Erne Gaels. After two wins and a draw we qualified for the final against the hosts, Devenish. The homesters proved to strong in the final, despite a game battle by the Ernesiders. Many thanks to Devenish for the invite as well as the warm welcome and hospitality. Many thanks to Tracey Flood who took some pictures of the action which we have up on aodhruadh.org.

Under 8 training continues this Friday from 6pm to 7pm.

~ HURLING ~

The under 12s had a great win in Páirc Aodh Ruaidh on Thursday last. The match was closely contested throughout and a last minute goal by the home team saw them run out winners by a point. They have now qualified to play MacCumhaill’s at home in the B final this Thursday. The throw in is at 6.30pm. A good showing of support is needed for what is sure to be a close fought encounter.

The under 16s play Buncrana in the league final this Thursday in O’Donnell Park, Letterkenny, this very young team the majority of whom are under 14 face a tough battle against the Inishowen men.

On Saturday last Donegal under 13, under 14 and under 16 squads took part in the All Ireland blitzes held in Cavan and Monaghan, Aodh Ruadh were very well represented on these squads an indication of Aodh Ruadh’s current standing in Donegal hurling. On the under 13 squad we had Conal Sweeney, Brian McHenry, Stephen Anderson and Ryan Ayres. Oisín Rooney, Caolán Drummond, Brendan Gillespie, Kieran Daly, Shane McGrath, Garrett Sheerin and Jason Granaghan represented the under 14s, while Colm Kelly, Eddie Lynch and Ciaran Rami were playing for the under 16s.

~ YES WE CAN ~

The next collection of aluminium cans for recycling to raise much needed funds for Aodh Ruadh will take place at Father Tierney Park, Ballyshannon this Saturday 8th September from 12 noon to 1pm. Any other items of scrap metal are also welcome.

~ LADIES ~

The senior ladies faced Glenfin Sunday morning in Father Tierney Park. After a hard fought battle sides were left even at full time. We have a good few pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org thanks to the joint efforts of Ronan Matthews and Brian Drummond.

The under 16 girls continued their winning ways last Tuesday evening when they overcame a strong side from Four Masters. We have pictures from that victory up at aodhruadh.org. This Tuesday evening the girls make the long journey to Annagry where they will take on the girls from Naomh Mhuire. This game is due to throw in at 6pm.

~ RACE FOR SAM ~

With only one week left in the competition, Johnny Gallagher and his Falcarragh Shamrocks have been demoted to second place after leading for most of the year. We have a new leader in Rory O’Neill with the Ice cream Rovers after getting 10 points for the Mayo win. Michael Doherty and The Docs remain in third place and still in with a chance of winning. Declan O’Mahoney (Team Tinakill) moves up to fourth after the weekend game. Bernard Drummond (Barney the Bookie) and Niall Patton (Fishys Folly) are in joint fifth. So it’s still all to play for, and with 50 bonus points for winning the All-Ireland, and Michael Murphy still scoring points, it will be a very close finish. At the opposite end of the table, Brian Boyle (The Apprentice) remains rooted to the bottom of the table with Finbar Gethins (Finner Forever) two points above him. The final report will be after the All-Ireland Final, which hopefully will see a Donegal win. View the week 14 leader board on aodhruadh.org or in The Bridgend Bar every Tuesday.

~ STRICTLY COME DANCING ~

Once again Aodh Ruadh and Ballyshannon Musical Society are hooking up to bring you a Strictly Come Dancing extravaganza. Many of you will remember the great night we had last year in the Great Northern and the wonderful dancing we were treated to. We are now looking to find the new dancing stars of Ballyshannon. If you might be interested please give Emma Gaughan a call or text on 0863039610.

NAOMH CONAILL:

Following the wonderful performance of our county team in the semi-final we find ourselves in the wonderful position of planning for the All Ireland final at the end of September. One of the main tasks of the club over the next few weeks will be in acquiring and distributing tickets. The demand for tickets will exceed our allocation. This will mean that many will be disappointed. The club will initially allocate tickets to full members who apply. If surplus tickets are available these will be allocated by a commitee to those active within the club. Any person wishing to apply for a ticket must attend the clubhouse this Friday 7th September beween 7 & 9pm. When applying for a ticket each person must apply individually. Juveniles applying must be accompained by a full member. Anyone wishing to confirm whether they are full members should contact the club registrar David Kelch on 087 9220494. The club would ask all persons wishing to attend the game to also attempt to source tickets independently as this will reduce pressure on our own allocation.

There was no winner of last weeks lotto. The numbers drawn were 2,7,11 and 25. Two prizes of €50 went to Nellie Doherty Ard Mc Gill and Janice Mc Nelis Narin Road. Next weeks jackpot is €3,000.

The senior footballers drew with Aodh Ruadh Ballyshannon 0-9 to 1-6 on Saturday evening. The draw keeps Burt with a chance to fight their way out of relegation with two games remaining, both of which are must-win games. The reserve footballers were beaten 0-9 to 0-7 against their Ballyshannon counterparts. Burt were 0-7 to 0-1 down at half-time, but put in a good shift in the second period and just couldn’t get those final few scores.

Stand out performances from Josh Arbuckle, Caolan McDermott, Denver Kelly and Shaun McBride helped Burt control the game. The Burt team also welcomes back Keith Grant, who got the all clear recently after a year out. They face a much tougher test at home to Convoy this Friday night. Team and scorers: Ciaran Bradley; Anthony Breslin, Josh Arbuckle, Brendan McBride; Caolan McDermott, Denver Kelly (0-3), Matthew McDermott (0-1); Shaun McBride (1-0), Charles McDaid; Shane Bradley (1-0), Kieran Brady (0-1), Pierce Harrigan (0-3); Eanna McLaughlin (0-2), Keith Grant, Kielan McGowan (1-0). TIR CHONAILL GAELS:

Juniors: TCG 2-11; St Anthonys 2-08

Thirty five years ago was the last time the club were represented in the London junior championship final, many would say that’s a good thing but last Sunday at Ruislip our all home grown talent wrote another chapter into the club history.

The young guns defeated a fancied Saint Anthonys by a three point margin and nobody can doubt the result as the Gaels never extinguished the lead throughout.

An impressive opening half saw the lads run the Anthonys ragged with Liam Gavaghan leading a lively forward line well supported by Elliot and Mills.

A Ryan Elliot goal on the 25 minute mark was just rewards for all of the teams hard work with Gavaghan and Mills converting some fine points to leave the half time score

TCG 1-7; St Anthonys 0-4:

Liam Gavaghan scored the opening point of the second half making his personal score tally six and then we saw the Anthonys revival. A goal from the lively Paddy Finnegan gave them renewed confidence with the Gaels having to soak up some extra pressure.

Further points from Mills, Gavaghan and Donal Geraghty kept the score board ticking over until another Anthonys goal five minutes from time gave the game a lively finish.

Substitute Brendan Scanlon gave the Gaels the reassurance they much needed when he scored a stunning goal to settle the nerves; two late points from the Reading men were to be the final scores of the game.

All round it was a great team effort with special mention for Cormac Mc Garvey and Kevin Mc Fadden in defence, Gavin Mc Evoy, Ryan Elliot and Liam Gavaghan up front.

Many thanks to all who came out and gave fantastic support to the team and we look forward to seeing you again in the final with the opposition being the winners of Cuchullians or Dulwich Gaels:

The club hope the injuries sustained during the game to Ryan Fortune, Stefan Carr and Tommy Moriarty are not serious and hope to have them all back for the final.

Team: John Flynn, Cormac Mc Garvey, Kevin Mc Fadden, Stefan Carr, (Ollie Hayes), Gerard Geraghty, Philip Butler, Sean Butler, Patrick Flynn, Gavin Mc Evoy, Ryan Elliot 1-1, Tommy Moriarty, (Donal Geraghty 0-1), Liam Cunningham, (Kieran Cunningham), Clive Mills 0-2, Liam Gavaghan 0-7 2f, Ryan Fortune, (Brendan Scanlon 1-0)
