Teelin Regatta a great success

Bhí ócáid iontach mór ag Cé Theilinn ar an 19ú Lunasa. Cé nach raibh an aimsir thar moladh beirt ní chuir sé isteach ar na ceatha daoine sa cheantar do ‘Lá Mór Theilinn’, nó ar an iomaíocht mhór idir thar scór foirne a bhí páirte sa rasaí skiff agus punt.

Bhí ceithre club páirteach sa regatta, Club Iomartha Theilinn, Baile Dún na nGall, Tráigh Eanach agus Pointe Loughros. Keeping with the traditions of the past, the regatta was opened by the Kilcar pipe band. The many hundreds of spectators were treated to some great displays of oarsmanship in closely contested races.

Three crews participated in the U-16 skiff race, Teelin, Loughros Point A and Loughrous Point B. In a closely contested race, the Teelin crew of Domnic Gallagher, Connor Kennedy, Patrick Byrne, Peadar Conroy and Prionnsias Kelly (cox) came out on top. These young lads are the future of skiff racing, and put on a great display of oarsmanship, both clubs should be really proud of their young rowers and if other clubs follow their lead then there will be a healthy future for skiff racing.

Seven teams contested the ladies event, Traigheanna, Loughros Point. two Teelin crews and three from Donegal. The final was between the Donegal A, Loughros Point, Traigheanna and Teelin A. The Loughros ladies, Paul Melly (Cox), Caroline Whyte, Fiona McCabe, Teresa Keeney and Christina Gildea came out on top yet again as has been at all regatta’s so far this season, followed in second by Traigheanna, third Donegal A and not far behind an ever improving Teelin crew.

Nine teams competed in the mens event, Traigheanna, two crews from both Loughros and Donegal and four Teelin crews. The two Donegal cews made the final along with Traigheanna and Loughros Point B. The Traigheanna crew of Catriona Solan (Cox), Oscar Duffy, Paddy Solan, Kevin Boyle and Darragh Gallagher came home first in what was a closely contested race with Donegal A and Loughros B not far behind.

The final race of the day was the Two Oar Punt Race, in which three teams participated, Teelin, Traigheanna and Loughros Point, with the Teelin crew of Sean Boyle (Cox), Prionnsias Kelly and Brian Mc Nally coming home first followed by Traigheanna. This was a second victory for Prionnsias and Brian this year having already won their catogery in Cork’s ‘Ocean to City Race’ over the June Bank Holiday.

The hosting of this event is a great example of commuinity spirit and co-operation, the committee of Club Iomartha Theilinn wish to thank everyone collectively, (as there were so many who helped, one might forget someone if we start to thank invidually. Everyone’s contrubition was important to the sucess of the event.) who helped to organise the regatta and establish it as a great sporting, social and family day. Go raibh maith agaibh go léir.
