St. Michael’s proved too strong for Kilcar in this re-arranged fixture in the All County Football League Division One at the Bridge in Dunfanaghy, on Sunday. The win also moves them clear in second place in the table, just two points behind St. Eunan’s.

St. Michael’s 2-10

Kilcar 0-6

St. Michael’s lined out with county ace Colm McFadden but had Martin McElhinney, Christy Toye, Daniel McLaughlin, Peter Witherow and Antoin McFadden from Jim McGuinness’s squad on board.

Kilcar were minus their county men Mark McHugh and Patrick McBrearty and were further weakened by the absence of Noel Hegarty (injured) and Barry Doherty (suspended).

The opening 30 minutes were even and Kilcar coped pretty well without their missing contingent with a Michael McGinley goal separating the sides.

St. Michael’s led 1-2 to 0-2 at half-time with Brendan Rodden and McElhinney scoring the St. Michael’s points and Ryan McHugh – the game’s opening score – and Mark Sweeney raising the Kilcar white flags.

The second period was very much a one sided affair as Christy Toye, Andrew Kelly, Daniel McLaughlin all hit the target and McGinley struck for his second goal to open up a 2-8 to 0-3 lead by the 50 minute mark.

Eoin McHugh, who kicked his third point in the early minutes of the second period, along with Darragh O’Donnell and Ryan McHugh posted late points.

But St. Michael’s, who had fine performances from Martin McElhinney, Christy Toye and Michael McGinley, ran out easy winners and bagged the points to see them go to second place in the league table on their own.

Ryan and Eoin McHugh, Michael Hegarty and Mark Sweeney were the men to stand out for Kilcar.
