Thanks to a magnificent display from 16-year-old Stephen McBrearty, Kilcar proved too strong for Aodh Ruadh in the Southern Minor League final in Dunkineely on Friday evening.
Aodh Ruadh 2-10
The final scoreline did not flatter the winners, who were always a step ahead, even though Aodh Ruadh kept going to the end.
Kilcar set out their stall from early on with the wind at their back and were finding holes in the Aodh Ruadh defence although Kevin Warnock did his best to keep his side in the match, making some good stops, but when his from Matthew McClean on 16 minutes rebounded to Stephen McBrearty to slide home, the gap opened to 1-5 to 1-2 and by half-time that gap was 1-13 to 1-5.
The first four points were shared with McBrearty and Eoin McHugh points cancelled by Johnny Gethins and Ryan Granaghan. McClean and McBrearty (2) edged Kilcar three claer by a goal by James Barron levelled matters.
Then Kilcar took over with Neil Sweeney, McClean (2) Eoin McHugh (2) adding points and before half-time McBrearty and Ryan McHugh had further scores while David McGurrin had two points for Aodh Ruadh.
In the early stages of the second half Kilcar lost Aodhan McGinley with damaged ankle ligaments but they still stretched the lead to 1-18 to 1-6 with McBrearty (2), McClean and Ryan McHugh pointing.
Aodh Ruadh did stage a mini comeback with David McGurrin hitting some good points and also setting up Colm Kelly for a well-taken goal, but the result was never in doubt.
Apart from the excellent Stephen McBrearty, Matthew McLean, the McHughs and Aodhan McGinley were best for the winners while for Aodh Ruadh, Ryan Patton, Kevin Warnock, Ryan Granaghan, Johnny Gettins and David McGurrin were best.
