Mark English is on his way to the World Junior Championships in Barcelona in July having made the qualifying standard in thrilling fashion in Manchester on Tuesday night.
The Dublin Institute of Technology student won the 800m the British Milers Club (BMC) meet in a personal time of 1:48.19 to make the standard of 1:48.3.
English finished in front of a top class field. Same Dykes from Warrington was second in 1:50.39, while Ben Waterman of Ealing, Southall and Middlesex was third in 1:50.54. Letterkenny Athletic Club enjoyed fruitful evenings in Manchester. Danny Mooney ran a superb 1:51.5 in the 800m to come fifth behind his clubmate English and Ciaran Doherty set a new person best, running the 1,500m in 3:59.5. The World Junior Championships take place in Barcelona from July 10-15.
