Donegal Ladies were well and truly beaten by a talented Monaghan side in Convoy on Sunday.
Ciara McAnespie set Monaghan on their way with a goal on four minutes and by half-time the Farney girls were well on their way, leading 2-9 to 0-3.
The second goal came from Caithriona McConnell on 11 minutes while McAnespie tortured the Donegal defence with her runs and Caoimhe Mohan also impressed.
Mohan had two points while full-forward Ellen McCarron chipped in with three.
Donegal made little headway with their best player Karen Guthrie hitting two frees while Aoife McDonnell added their only point from play in the opening half.
Mohan opened the second half scoring and while Karen Guthrie hit back with a good score, a third Monaghan goal was registered on 40 minutes when McConnell’s effort was dropped by Niamh Mailey and ended in the net.
Donegal did get a goal when Karen Guthrie fired home a penalty on 50 minutes but goals from McAnespie and Mohan left Monaghan very clear winners.
This duo carried a very sharp attacking threat with Mohan just edging the Lady of the Match award, but the Monaghan girls were tops in almost every area of the pitch.
Ciaran Hegarty, Aoife McDonnell and especially Guthrie tried valiantly and to be fair to the Donegal girls they never gave in. But without the likes of Geraldine McLaughlin and Ailish Ward, this Donegal team will find the going tough against the very top teams.
Indeed one might suggest that even with all their best talent available, injured and overseas, they would have difficulty competing against this top notch Monaghan side.
