Boxing golds for Donegal

DONEGAL is celebrating another three All- Ireland Champions this week following the weekend success of Finn Valley ABC boxer Michael Gallagher; Stephen Stokes of Twin Towns and Leight Moran from Illies at the National Boy and Youth Boxing championships.

DONEGAL is celebrating another three All- Ireland Champions this week following the weekend success of Finn Valley ABC boxer Michael Gallagher; Stephen Stokes of Twin Towns and Leight Moran from Illies at the National Boy and Youth Boxing championships.

Gallagher is the new champion Youth One light-heavyweight champion while Stokes claimed a second national crown at 48kg and Moran took the laurels at Youth Two, 46kg.

The Finn Valley fighter - a European Schoolboys bronze medal winner from two years ago - defeated Shane Ward from the Olympic Club in Galway in Saturday’s final in the National Stadium. In the earlier rounds to qualify for the final he overcame the highly rated James Mullaney and Martin Collins.

Meanwhile, the Twin Towns man received a walkover in his final with Keith Groves of West Finglas Boxing Club, who withdrew and it was a similar story for Moran who as also awarded a walkover.

There were final defeats for Conor Bianconni, Twin Towns and Daryll Moran Illies against Karl Lynch of Mulhuddart BC and Dom Sarsfield, St. Francis, in Dublin.

Moran was very unfortunate to lose out 3-2 on count-back after his bout with Sarsfield ended level on 29-29.

Binanconni went down 16-6 having been 3-1 behind at the end of the first round and 10-5 down at the end of the second.

The next few weeks are busy on the local boxing scene. The action starts on Friday with Finn Valley ABC’s big fight night in the Finn Valley Centre. The highlight of the night sees the Finn Valley taking on a Monaghan selection with the feature fight the meeting of local favourite Jason Quigley and National U-21 champion and defeated senior semi-finalists Chris Blaney from Navan. In all there are 14 fights on the card with the first bell at 8.30pm.

On Sunday the North West Zone for Boys 11, 12 and 13 years of age, takes place in Letterkenny Gym with weigh-in from 9am to 11am with the first bout timed for 1pm.

Then on the following Saturday night, March 24, Raphoe Boxing Club are staging the annual Billy ‘Spider’ Kelly Memorial tournament in the Cathedral Hall.

Again this tournament will be made up of 14 bouts with a Raphoe Selection taking on a North West All-Star Selection. The first fight is timed for 8.30pm.
