Derry’s North West Regional College had a strong Donegal influence when they won the All-Ireland Further Education Division Two championship title by defeating Southern Regional College in Belfast.

Under the management of Gerard Faulkner from Moville and David McGinley, a clubman of St Eunan’s in Letterkenny, NWRC won 2-10 to 1-8.

Caolan Ward from St Eunan’s was full-back, Ardara’s Conor Classon was centre-field and scored a first half goal, while the half-forward line was all Donegal - Shaun McGarvey of Cloughaneely, who scored five points, there was 1-3 from the boot of Daniel McLaughlin from St Michael’s, while Jamie Doherty of Letterkenny Gaels was a point scorer. Ardara’s Gerard Walsh and Packie Kennedy from St Eunan’s wore the respective 13 and 14 shirts. Ronan Gallen and Denim Rowan from Red Hugh’s were substitutes, as were Naomh Mhuire’s Conor Devenney and Kevin Boyle, as well as Jame Alcorn of St Michael’s.

Aided with a slight breeze in the first half, the North West men went in at the break 1-6 to 1-1 in front, with Classon the goalscorer. SRC, who have education centres in Armagh, Banbridge, Kilkeel, Lurgan, Newry and Portadown, upped the tempo of their game following the restart.

The key moment of the game came on 49 minutes when McLaughlin advanced through the SRC defence to drill the ball home from close range. The Donegal wing-forward followed this with an excellent point a minute later from his trusty left boot.

As the final whistle sounded it was greeted with scenes of joy from the North West men who lost out in last year’s final to Cavan. Captain Aaron McColgan duly accepted the Further Education Championship trophy to bring back to the banks of the River Foyle.
