Although maintaining a reasonably comfortable cushion throughout the game, the conclusion was an interesting one following Ciaran Moy’s last minute goal. The Glenfin forward’s quick thinking saw him plant a free into the top corner of Christopher Patton’s goal when the home defence had been readying themselves on the line.

However, that wasn’t enough for the side managed by Francie Martin, who had Paul McCrudden sent off late in the game. And in truth, anything other than a home win would’ve been unjust on Sean MacCumhaill’s, who were certainly the better team throughout.

At half-time the team under the stewardship of Pat McNabb led by two points, 0-7 to 0-5, with Benny McLaughlin, Martin O’Reilly and David White all scoring points. At the other end, the away team were well served by Moy, who scored three points, as Gerard Ward and Ciaran Foy were also on the mark.

MacCumhaill’s were much the better of the second half starters and stretched their advantage from two to six, with their four unanswered points coming from O’Reilly and McLaughlin once more. As the game appeared to be slipping away from Glenfin, they responded from successive Moy scores, although the first of those was the first time in 19 minutes they had scored.

As full-time approached the play became a little more frantic with the darkening skies adding to the atmospheric value. McCrudden saw red for flattening Joe Dunnion. And although White and Kevin McGlynn traded scores before Moy’s late goal, the diligent third quarter in particular was enough to see MacCumhaill’s home.
