Strabane District Council in Partnership with Lifford Athletic Club will play host to the regions second annual cross border half marathon and 5k fun run/walk on Sunday 26th April 2015.

This follows a hugely successful inaugural event last year which attracted nearly 600 participants, a race which attracted local and visiting athletes of all ages and abilities. Strabane District Sports Forum and Lifford Athletic Club are once again promoting this year’s event, which is open to everyone, whether they are seasoned roadrunners, recreational joggers or health conscious walkers.

The partnership approach to last years race contributed to the outstanding success of the event, with the unique cross border dimension creating a hugely positive atmosphere. The course is also recognised as one of the fastest in the country, last years winner Stephen Duncan breaking the tape in 1.09 with recent Masters Cross Country Champion, Natasha Adams the first woman home in 1.18 This cross border half marathon and 5km fun run is on the Athletics NI and Athletics Ireland fixture list and is expected to receive support both locally and from further a field. There are categories for all ages, as well as a walking section, giving everyone an opportunity to participate no matter what their fitness levels, however half marathon participants must be over 17 years of age.

The race organisers are hoping to top the 1,000 mark for this years event. The event will include what is expected of a top class race including chip timing, split timing, pacers, post race massage, quality technical t-shirt, a specially designed commemorative medal as well as an impressive prize fund. It is hoped that the same level of support will be received from local clubs to once again make the event a big success. The day also requires assistance from the public. Anyone interested in volunteering as a steward should contact the Sports Development Unit, Strabane District Council, 47 Derry Road, Strabane. Tel: 7138 2204.
