This year was the 5th Anniversary of the Finn Valley Badminton Championships, and the host club had a very good reason to celebrate as Three Rivers Badminton Club also marked the 10th year of their foundation.

The Finn Valley Badminton Championships was started from scratch in 2010 by Three Rivers Badminton, under the direction of John Hunter and Maxine McCreary. The club management had an enormous task, to get sponsorship, to locate old perpetual cups or buy new ones, to promote the tournament and attract enough competitors to make the event viable.

The central location of the C.A.K.E. Centre, in Killygordon, where the 3 Rivers Badminton Club is based, is where the Finn Valley Badminton Championships are held, with 3 badminton courts, and recent renovations, lots of space makes it an outstanding one location to run a multy event badminton tournament.

The various events, with grades from Minor C. to Senior, are run in a very professional manner, top official ranked players are seeded, competitors join in an open draw for the remainder of the places at the commencement of each night. The club is always reviewing it`s tournaments and looking for ways to improve standards and make the events more attractive.

The 3 rivers club has introduced a special ladies day, in memory of the late Hannah Wiley, former 3 Rivers club member and player, featuring Minor C., B., A and Junior standard lady players.

What makes the Finn Valley Badminton Championships so attractive to competitors, from through out the county and beyond, is very good communication and respect between tournament organisers and competitors, good time keeping running the events with minimum delay to players and quite a lot of events completed on night and the premium finals kept for the final`s night and presentations.

There is always a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere at the tournaments, and players and spectators, alike, can help themselves to a free cup of tea and biscuits, when ever it suits them, in the canteen, and view the badminton competition from the balcony. Sure, where else would you get pampered like that .

This year, with 17 events, perpetual cups for every competition and good player presentations for winners and runners-up, it was the largest senior tournament in Co. Donegal.
