Wesley Patterson and Letterkenny’s Johnny Baird clinched a dramatic last stage victory by the narrowest margins in recent Irish Rallying history.
The crew clinched a last gasp victory in the Carlow Stages Ralley by 0.01 of a second over Welsh Driver Steve Woods in his Subaru Wrc with Declan Gallagher and Ryan Moore third in their hired Mrk2 Escort.
After nine stages and over an hours Rallying that amazing Gap of only 0.01 seconds shows the intense battle that took place all day.
Paddy McVeigh and Donegal Town man Gary McElhinney led the event in their S12 but a stage 6 accident ended their hopes of the overall win and immediate retirement. So the battle was left to the last stage with Patterson & Baird 4.8 behind Wood and 1.1 of Gallagher it was down to the wire.
But the Lisburn and Letterkenny pairing came out on top after a fantastic run through the stage to clinch 1st Overall and the Mrk2 Challenge Trophy, piping Woods in the Subaru to second and Declan Gallagher to third this was a great result for Gallagher in his first run in an Escort, 4th Overall was David Condell from Carlow with Letterkenny man Eugene McGrath on the notes.
It was also a welcome return for Glenswilly man Manus Kelly taking Vincent Collins Pinto Escort home to second in class.
