The former Letterkenny AC athlete, now runnng in the colours of University College, Dublin, was named the Overall Donegal Sports Star for 2014 in front of a packed house at the annual Donegal Sports Star Awards in the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny on Friday night.

Over 600 people attended with the special guest, RTE presenter Sean O’Rourke. The 21 year-old, who came within a whisker of claiming a silver medal in the 800 metres at the European Championships last August, was a popular winner.

English was also named Irish Athlete of Year for 2014 at the end of last year and is recognised as one of Ireland’s great medal hopes for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

He was not present on Friday night to pick up the award as he is the USA this weekend competing in the New Balance Games in New York. His father Joe English picked up the award on Mark’s behalf.

In all there were 42 awards presented on the night with Tir Chonaill AC athlete, Neil McGee, Donegal and Gaoth Dobhair was named Gaelic Footballer of the Year; Michael Gallagher, Finn Valley ABC, picked up the Boxer of the Year Award.

Termon GAA club were one of the big winners on the night. The club’s All-Ireland Club Championship winning ladies team were named the Team of the Year and their manager, Francie Friel, was named the manager of the year.

And their ace forward Geraldine McLaughlin capped a brilliant night for the club when she was presented with the prestigious Brendan McDaid Memorial Special Achievment Award.

Everton and Irish International soccer star Seamus Coleman’s great exploits in 2014 were recognised when the Killybegs man was named the winner of the Professional Sport Achievment award.

There was no great surprise that Declan and Brian Boyle, winners of the Donegal International Rally and the National Rally Tarmac Champions, picked up the Motor Sport Award.

Karl Griffin formely of Tir Chonaill AC and now of UCD AC was named the Junior Athlete of the Year and former Burt, Donegal and Ulster hurler James McLaughlin was inducted in the Donegal Sports Stars Hall of Fame.

Nora Stapleton, rugby, Cian Hickey, basketball, Ciara Doogan, cycling Lisa Moore, equestrian, James Corry, hockey were other popular winners.
