There was a strong local feel at the top of the leaderboard after Day 1 of the Joule Donegal International Rally on Friday.
After an exciting first day of racing, Garry Jennings and Letterkenny’s Rory Kennedy, in a Subaru WRC, led the way.
They held a 3.2 second lead over rally favourite Donagh Kelly and Kevin Flanagan, in a Ford Focus WRC after an eventful opening six stages. Last year’s winners, Declan Boyle and Brian Boyle in a new Ford Focus WRC, were in third place, 17 seconds down on Kelly and Flanagan.
Reigning champions Gary McPhillips and Paul Sheridan, in their Escort Mk2, led the National section of the rally after early pace-setter ‘the Milkman’ Declan Gallagher, with Ryan Moore, went off on the last stage.
In Group N, Aidan Wray led the way after the opening day’s six stages, with fellow Strabane man, Pat Kirk in second and Dara Leonard in third.
