Twin Towns Boxing Club had mixed fortunes at the National Intermediate Championships at the National Stadium in Dublin over the weekend.
Paul Kelly, who boxes at middleweight had a convincing win when he stopped his opponent Denis Ahern of Castlebar by Technical knockout (TKO) in the third round.
The bout started off strong from both boxers with both coming forward with strong combinations but Paul covered up well and replied well.
In the second Paul worked out Aherns weaknesses and started landing fast hard combinations to the head and body giving his opponent a cut over the right eye, the doctor let the contest continue and Paul then forced two standing counts in the final round and the referee then stopped the contest in Pauls favour by TKO 3.
Paul will now be back in action in the quarter finals next Saturday morning against Uladamir Beluski of Watergrasshill, Co. Cork.
Lee Bradley was also in action in the prelims on Friday night against Johnny Harty from Rathkeale B.C. Dublin.
This was a very tactical bout from both boxers and after the first round it could have gone anyway in the second Harty put on more pressure and landed more punches through Lee’s defence. In the final round Lee gave his all to take the final round and knew it could go either way but unluckily came out on the losing side 3-0 by 29-28, 29-28, 29-28.
Finally Twin Towns other boxer in the championships, Donna Barr boxing at 50kg will box against Kirsty McCarthy of Golden Cobra, Dublin in the finals on Saturday 29th Nov.
Isaac McLoughlin and Ciara Anderson, two Twin Towns boxers, recently attended a squad training session held in Belfast by Barry McGuigan, Carl Frampton, Jamie Conlon and Conrad Cummings. the programme concentrated on technique, fitness, diet and nutrition.
