Lifford Athletic Club host the Riverine 10K and 5K Walk next Sunday 10th August starting at 10.00am. The inaugural event was held last year as part of the Riverine Programme, a joint initiative between Strabane District Council and Donegal County Council and proved to be an outstanding success with athletes attending from right across the North West. Indeed, the success of last years race was the catalyst for further co-operation between the Lifford club and Strabane District Council which brought the first ever Cross Border Strabane Lifford Half Marathon to the region in May.
Both last year’s Riverine race and this years Half Marathon have now cemented a unique cross border approach and partnership to event organisation in the area, with Augusts’s Riverine 10K and 5K Walk now replacing the annual Strabane 10K traditionally held in July and attracting upwards on 500 participants every year. Again this year, the 5K Walk will start on the bridge, symbolising the cross border cross community nature of the event.
Last year’s inaugural race was won by Foyle Valley’s Keith Shiels in 31.21 with current Irish international Ann Marie McGlynn winning in 35.24. This year, a €200 bonus is on offer to the first man under 31 minutes and for the first woman under 35 minutes.
The Ipico Chip Timing system used for the likes of the London Marathon will be in operation guaranteeing accurate and timely results and early prize giving. As with all Lifford AC organised races, the course has been measured by a certified Athletics Ireland Official, with a Certificate of Measurement given for the course.
Pre Entry can be made via the Lifford AC web site liffordac.com or via the Riverine 10K Facebook page. For further information, please contact Brendan O’Donnell on 086-6007847
