Donegal Ladies RFC took to the field against Finn Valley on a cold windy afternoon and started the stronger. But after just three mins disaster as Donegal flanker Michelle Dunnion had to be taken off and rushed to hospital with a broken ankle.

During this period Donegal went in for a try and in the commotion there was confusion on whether Leanne Wray or Laura Kenny scored but they gladly took the score with Helen McPartlan converting.

The lead was shortlived as from the restart Finn Valley went go over for a try of their own. This didn’t faze Donegal as both backs and forwards worked up the pitch and Laura Kenny, with some quick ball from her sister Linda Kenny, would break the line and go in for Donegals second. The two teams battled back and forth but it was Finn Valley who get the next try despite some valiant defending from Nao Cannon, Amanda Dunnion and Martina Cunningham. Half time score 12-10 to Donegal.

Donegal received the restart and would work their way into Finn Valley’s half and after 10 minutes of pressure McPartlan used her pace to get around the Finn Valley defence and score their third try. Newcomer and debutant Ann Marie McAloon was only the pitch for two minutes when a quick pass from Claire Graham allowed her to run for the line. She was tackled short but stretched for the line and what seemed like a try would be disallowed for a knock on.

Finn Valley would put the pressure back on Donegal though and would work a very well deserved try which was mauled over the line. Donegal was not finished though and with some good forward play from Claire McGlinchey, Joanne McCormack and Lady of the Match Elaine Britton they stretched their lead to 7 points when Helen would break through for her second try. The game finished 22-15 to Donegal. Congratulations to Olga Grisina, Hanah Cullen and Ann Marie McAloon on their debutes for the club.

Donegal’s next game is away against Ballinahinch on March 9th and newcomers always welcome.
