The Letterkeny Under 18 Blaze Girls Basketball team secured a place in the Ulster semi finals with an emphatic win over a fancied Queens team on Saturday 22nd March.

The game started with Blaze winning possession and Laura Kelly scoring the opening basket. This was quickly followed by three baskets from Aine McGettigan on the fast break. Passes delivered by Leanne Barrett and accurate shooting by Clodagh Brennan secured three further baskets for Blaze. Queens rallied and put four points on the score board but determined defensive play by Laura Kelly and Sinead Hession left Blaze leading by 14 points at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw no let up from the Blaze offence with great interplay and sharp passing. Queens were stunned at the pace of the Blaze girls and managed only three baskets this quarter. Blaze scores came from Leanne Barrett, Laura Kelly, Aine McGettigan and Clodagh Brennan which along with a strong defensive performance from Megan Brennan extended the Blaze lead at half time to 21 points.

The third quarter opened with Blaze running their offensive plays to good effect. Three baskets from Leanne Barrett and three from Aine McGettigan kept pressure on Queens. Queens had their best quarter of the game, pressed the Blaze defence but Blaze finished with baskets from Laura Kelly and Clodagh Brennan to lead by 23 points

The fourth quarter showed the potential of this Letterkenny Blaze team as they produced some fine basketball. The quarter opened with scores from Aine McGettigan and Clodagh Brennan. Tessa Aheng and Emma Horgan and Laoise McMenamin kept pressure on Queens with consistent passing in this quarter. Sinead Coleman rebounded, ran the length of the court and scored for Blaze. This was followed by a great score from Niamh McGinty after she continued to battle for possession under the boards. Aisling Nee scored from a free throw and with Serena Regan rebounding under the boards left the final score at Letterkenny Blaze 62 Queens Belfast 32

Sean Wynne the Queens coach praised the Blaze girls for a fine team performance and wished them well in their Ulster semi-final.
