On Saturday Letterkenny 2nd XV travelled the long distance to Antrim town to play the league leaders of Ulster Minor League East 1 in the second round of the McCambley Cup.
Antrim 1st XV 36
Letterkenny 2nd XV 12
This was going to be a tough game for the Kenny men as Antrim had a 10 game winning streak behind them. The first half started off perfectly with a try by centre Henry in the first five minutes.
The strong Kenny pack also showed off their mauling skills with a drive from their own 22 right into the Antrim 22. However as the half went on it was the Antrim men using their strong backline who came out on top running through two tries.
The second half started off poorly for Kenny with another quick try off the back of a scrum from Antrim. Handling errors from Letterkenny also turned the ball over numerous times for Antrim, however the strong Kenny scrum through props McElmeel and Morris drove Antrim back every time allowing Kenny to recover possession.
Letterkenny lost this advantage when an Antrim prop went off injured. With no front row cover from Antrim the ref decided to go with uncontested scrums.
Letterkenny continued though to put pressure on with some excellent lineout moves between Lawless, Foy and Clarke which saw Kenny gaining good ground eventually getting a scrum in the Antrim 22 allowing scrum half King get over on the blindside for the try. After this another couple of easy tries for Antrim through their backs put any chance of a comeback for Letterkenny to bed.
The heads dropped in last 10 minutes for Kenny and Antrim ran in another try to seal the victory. Final score Antrim 36 Letterkenny 12.
Against a strong side like Antrim the young Letterkenny side showed a lot of promise and although out of the Cup will aim to finish off their league season with a strong win against Limavady.
This Saturday Letterkenny 1st XV are travelling to play Monaghan in the Quarter Final of the Gordon West Cup. Kick off is at 2:30 for anyone wishing to travel and support the guys.
