Badminton - Donegal do well in Ulster Gilbert Cup
The Gilbert Cup, Ulster Inter League Senior Badminton competition, took place in the National Badminton Hall, Lisburn on Saturday last and Donegal were among nine teams competing for the top honours.

The Gilbert Cup, Ulster Inter League Senior Badminton competition, took place in the National Badminton Hall, Lisburn on Saturday last and Donegal were among nine teams competing for the top honours.

Donegal progressed out of Group B with a 4/3 win over East Antrim A who beat Church of Ireland 6-1 earlier in the morning, and Donegal also beat Church of Ireland 7-0. In the first match in Division One, Donegal were beaten 4-3 by Ballinderry after a very tough encounter, Donegal winning two ladies, 2nd Ladies, 2nd Mens and 2 Mixed.

In ther second match Donegal produced their best performance of the day, losing three setes by a few aces in the third game, with very good wins in 2nd Ladies, 2nd Mens and 1st Mixed, but this was not quite good enough as North Down won the match 4-3.

North Down also defeated Ballinderry 4-3 to win the Division 1 Gilbert Cup on 8 pts; Ballinderry on 7 pts were runners up with Donegal third on 6 pts.

Coleraine won Division 2 with Ulster League A runners up and East Antrim A third.

Ulster League B won Division 3 with Church of Ireland runners up and East Antrim B third.

A very good performance by all the Donegal players, competing well above their present weight in a very competitive and enjoyable competition.
