Donegal Golf Club’s course at Murvagh consistently features as one of the top 20 golf courses in Ireland. Over the years, the club has hosted some of the top National Armature Championships with players such as Rory McIlroy competing. Indeed Darren Clarke describes the course as “One of my favourite courses in the world.”
Each year the Club attracts thousands of visitors from Ireland and across the world. The majority of overseas visitors are from The USA, Great Britain, and Europe with increasing numbers from Japan and other Asian states. The value of this to the local economy can be gauged from Fáilte Ireland figures that show each overseas golf tourist is worth an average of €1200 to the economy (two and a half times that of the average tourist). The figures also show just 21% of this figure is spent on Green fees with the remainder going towards transport, food, accommodation and associated costs.
The Murvagh Peninsula is ideal for golf as it provides the characteristics required for the perfect round, top quality golf course, excellent scenery and a peaceful location. The club however are aware that because of the location many people living in the locality have never visited or indeed are not aware of the facilities that are available. Because of this, the club have launched an initiative to afford people the opportunity to try out the game for a day free of charge. On the 22nd of March at 2pm the club will host an “Introduction to Golf Day”. Participants will be given an introductory lesson by resident club Professional Leslie Robinson and offered the opportunity to use the Club Driving Range, Putting Green or play a few holes if they wish. The day is aimed at Adults of any age with little or no Golf experience. Clubs, balls etc will be supplied. Following the outdoor activities, refreshments will be available in the Clubhouse restaurant.
Donegal Golf Club has always strived to maintain costs to its members at a rate that affords everybody the opportunity to play and Special rates are available for Juniors, Students, Beginners and Family members. Participants are advised to bring clothing suitable for outdoor activities, e.g. Rain jacket, runners etc.
