Errigal Cycling Club’s Ciara Doogan capped off a great season at the Sainsbury’s 2013 School Games in the UK last week.
She travelled to Sheffield with fellow Errigal riders Amy Harkin, Orla Fogarty and Christine Russell and the trio acquitted themselves well in what was a multi-sport event for the UK’s elite young athletes of school age.
For such a number to be picked from one club reflects greatly on Errigal’s current crop of talented youngsters and once again highlights both the quality of coaching and dedication of our youths.
First discipline that the girls took part in was the 4 up street sprint over a distance of 250 metres, which was very technical, unfortunately Ciara crashed out on her first qualifier, Amy struggled to get up to speed for the first corner and was therefore always chasing.
Christine and Orla competed well but not well enough to make the A finals.
In the B-final, Ciara rode from the front, pushing the pace on at every opportunity, it was a plan that worked as she went on to win.
The second event was a hilly 2.5km time trial, Amy was the first Ulster rider off, and had the fastest time for a while of 5:07, Christine then regained the top spot with a time of 4:59 and with all the teams having kept their fastest riders till last the lead changed many times with riders taking one or two seconds off each other.
Ciara, who was very determined on the day, set off and took the lead from the off beating the holder by nine seconds in a time of 4:34.
She was only to be beaten into second place by the current British Champion.
Performance of the day was from the Ulster Boys team time trial as they put in a disciplined team performance to take second place, only being beaten for gold by just one second.
The next days racing included the Girls 40 km Road Race that made for some super racing in very cold and windy conditions, Ciara put in a magnificent performance for a fourth place finish, Christine finished well up in the field, whilst Amy who lost a pedal early on got back on the bike to pick off a few riders at the back.
This was Ulster’s’ best ever performance after many years of competing in this event and the girls from Errigal deserve a big pat on the back for competing well against the very best that the UK has to offer.
