The Donegal County Darts teams were playing again last weekend 7th and 8th February in the Wst County Hotel Ennis, Co. Clare.
As usual the men and womens teams were put in groups and had to play round robin. The Men’s team won their group and were through to the last 16 for Sunday morning for straight knockout, and the women finished 2nd in their group and were also through to the knockout stage on Sunday.
The men started out defeating Longford 7-3; then on to Cavan in last eight, who we defeated them 7-4. In the semi-final we defeate to reach the final against Dublin.
The women won their first match against Limerick 4-3 and then met Wexford losing 4-3 . Very well done ladies as they were missing one of their best players due to illness.
The Men’s final was very tense as all you could hear was “Donegal won’t win 2 games this year, Donegal are too old”, etc.. But we played on through all the noise, and when it was all over we had beaten the Mighty Dublin team 7-2.
Clive Aitken won his game to give Donegal their 11th All-Ireland title. Noel O’Donnell (team captain) commented: “We played well as a team today and all the boys stuck in and cheered each other on. This win was dedicated to Anthony Whoriskey as his uncle took ill and he had to depart on Saturday night.
“We would like to thank all the supporters who came down and cheered us on and also thank the West County Hotel, the venue on the day, and finally we would like to thank Glenveagh Engineering for their kind sponsorship to the men’s and women’s teams,” said Noel.
