After defeating Civil Service in their final Kir Cup game on Wednesday night, Raphoe 1st team travelled to Hillsborough on Saturday for their 3rd premier league game of the season against title contenders Lisnagarvey.

Lisnagarvey took an early lead from a penalty corner, Johnny Rankin saving the initial shot but the rebound fell kindly to the Peter MacDonnell who finished well.

Raphoe immediately responded, Gavin Lecky managing to weave past the Garvey defence but sent his reverse stick shot high over the bar, the following attack saw Ian McGonigle burst into the Garvey penalty area but watched as he agonisingly pulled his shot inches wide of the post.

Raphoe where made to rue these misses as Lisnagarvey took a 2 goal lead, Raphoe keeper Johnny Rankin kicking the ball directly to Lisnagarvey who made no mistake on burying the opportunity in the back on the net. The half ended 2-0.

The second half seen the Raphoe men on the back foot the entire half, breaking down attack after attack with some solid defending from the Raphoe backline Simon Goudie, Matthew Lecky, Alan Meehan and Rodney Bates. Raphoe held on until 55th minute when after a scrappy short corner routine from the home side, the ball managed to fall to Garvey who’s deflected shot flew past the oncoming Raphoe keeper. Although Raphoe where defending well they where unable to form an attack against Daniel Buser and his fellow Garvey defenders, outnumbered and outsmarted each time when entering the Garvey Half.

With only 3 minutes left on the clock, the Raphoe men fell further behind, firstly from a goalline scramble which got converted in by Timmy Cockram and 2 minutes later a penalty corner found its way past Rankin to make the final score 5-0 to Lisnagarvey.

Man of the match for Raphoe was Matthew Lecky
