Letterkenny

Weather: There is an old saying that”It’s never bad weather, only wrong clothing” which the golfers of Donegal never seem to have! Despite the recent winter elements, club members were out in force and none more so than in Barnhill where on Wednesday 6th it was cat. 2 handicapper Hugh McClafferty [13] who received the winning pennant by virtue of BOT from juvenile member Philip Cassidy [16]. Despite double bogeys on the card, Hugh’s birdies at 7th and 16th carried him over the line with 35pts.
Sat. 9th Open was to see another regular cat.4 member Clive Watson [23] flying the flag for Gerry O’Sullivan’s men when returning no less than 43pts to take first place on the rostrum. Playing steady handicap golf, Clive’s birdie at 5th and 22pts on back nine could have been even more only for a “blip” on 18th. Running a close second, again on BOT, was the newly crowned single’s matchplay champion, juvenile Christopher Duffy [7] with 41pts. Recording birdies at 4th and 11th, Christopher returned a level par back nine 23pts and an overall one over par 73 gross. Relegated to third place was Gareth Devenney [19] also with 41pts.

Sunday: At one stage the Sunday 11th confined competition looked like it was going to be a birdie “shoot-out” between the winner and runner-up, with no less than eight [8] birdies being recorded between them. Having signed cards for 40pts each, it was Kevin Rafferty [10] who took the honours on BOT from Gerard Duffy [5]. Despite a “blank” at first, Kevin recorded birdies at 3rd, 5th, 8th, 12th and 18th for a front nine of 21pts [one over gross 37], and, despite double bogeys at 13th and 17th, hopped over the finishing line. The most consistant single figure handicapper in the club this year, Gerard Duffy [5], must have thought that he was picking up yet another first, with birdies at 5th, 7th and 12th and an overall one over par gross 73, but it was not to be.
The Captain, Lady Captain, committees and all club members of Letterkenny Golf Club would like to take this opportunity in wishing Finnian O’Doherty every success in his future golfing career.

The Art of Playing Golf: “The player who has the ability to concentrate on one shot at a time with singleness of thought throughout the round, is the player who will be champion”

Cruit

Turkey Shoot: We had our first “Turkey Shoot” of the year on Sunday week last. We all know at Cruit that “Donal” is the best player. We all know Derek is the best “Bonner”. On Sunday Shaun and Joseph went along way to showing whos the best “Cowley” and “Gillespie”. Two excellent rounds of 42pts by Shaun Cowley and Joseph Gillespie saw the first 2 “Turkeys” of the year head to Keadue and Mullaghduff. Derek was in 3rd place and had to settle for the “Duck”.

Results: 1st Shaun Cowley 42pts BOT; 2nd Joseph Gillespie 42pts; 3rd Derek Bonner 38pts; Front 9 John Ward 21pts; Back 9 John Bonner 21pts
On Sunday we had our second Turkey Shoot of the year. They were a very good turnout with several people playing on the Saturday now since time change and the option of playing Saturday or Sunday. Stephen Cowley was the man in form, and was clear winner with fantastic 41pts. It was no flash in the pan as Stephen has been taking in some excellent scores lately and has seen his Handicap fall from 17 to 11 in the last 6 months. Very well done. I would say several Team Captains will be looking for his phone number.

Turkey Shoot, Full Results: 1st Stephen Cowley 41pts; 2nd Aiden O Donnell 39pts; 3rd Brendan Ward 38pts BOT; Front 9 Robert Casey 19pts; Back 9 Michael O Donnell 20pts
