Results: Charlie Coughlan who, now able to concentrate on his own “golf v. course” game, proved that practice does indeed help when on Saturday 19th, playing off 12 handicap, Charlie returned an excellent 42pts. Played in unpredictable weather with a mixture of sunshine and showers, Charlie conjured a magnificent 32pts through thirteen holes, with no less than ten pars, and sniffing the opportunity to dismiss the disappointment of losing the Ulster Cup final, added birdies at 16th and 18th to take first place by one point. Following in hot pursuit was James Mc Fadden who would be forgiven for thinking that he was taking pride of place on the rostrum having secured birdies at 10th and 15th holes, but although finishing with 22pts on back nine, that double bogey at 14th left him with 41pts overall. In third place and from a three-way BOT, was a not too unfamiliar face to the winners circle, Roy Mc Crory . Back to the golf that we expect to see from Roy, his back-to-back birdies at 11th and 12th gave him 21pts on back nine and a finishing score of 40pts. Also on 40pts with another great round of golf was the intrepid Don Ponsonby returning a great gross score of 74, two over gross, helped by birdies at 7th and 15th holes. Congratulations to club Assistant Pro. Finnian O’ Dochartaigh, taking second place in the third NW Alliance outing of the year by recording a one under gross 71 on the Glashedy course in Ballyliffin.
Sunday 20th. Confined: Following on from his third placed “practice round” on Saturday was the formidable Roy Mc Crory who outstretched the field on Sunday by no less than five points to take first place on the podium! Roy recorded back-to-back birdies at 2nd and 3rd, 6th and 11th holes. With the only “blemish” on front nine being a double bogey at 4th, Roy returned a one under gross 71 for an overall 44 stableford points. Runner-up on Sunday was cat. 2 member Kevin Rafferty who, with a blank either side of his birdie at 8th, managed 20pts on back nine for a total of 39pts, whilst in third place on BOT was early season regular to the winners enclosure George Onofrie who, despite a birdie at 11th, was resigned to a double bogey finish on back nine to return 38pts.
