Mark English has withdrawn from the European Team Championships First League in Dublin this weekend.

A viral infection means the World Junior 800m finalist will not be an absentee. English will be replaced by Anthony Leighio from Tallaght AC, who is coached by Eamonn Coghlan.

Ireland senior team manager with Athletics Ireland, Patsy McGonagle, believes English made the correct call, especially since the European U-23’s take place in Tampere, Finland, between July 11 and 14.

“As manager I respect their decision in view of the pending European U-23 champs in three weeks time and wish him well,” McGonagle said.

Fionnuala Britton, back-to-back European Cross-Country with Ballintra connections, misses out with a chest infection. The Wickow native was favourite for the 5,000m title.

The only Donegal representative left in the team is national pole vault record holder, Finn Valley’s American Tori Pena.
