Donegal has a new rally champion following Declan Boyle’s win in Tipperary yesterday to clinch the Dunlop National Rally Championship.
Boyle and his cousin Brian Boyle, Subaru WRC recorded their fifth win of the Championship in some style at the Clonmel based Sepam Tipperary Stonethrowers Rally.
The Donegal crew finished the nine stage rally a minute and 57 seconds ahead of Roy White/James O’Brien (MG S2000).
The Welsh crew of James Belton/Mark Glennerster (Subaru WRC) were just 29 seconds further behind in third.
Boyle’s victory is only the third ever from a Donegal driver. Fellow Rosses man, Vincent Bonner won it in 1987 with Letterkenny navigator, Rory Kennedy, his co-driver, while Paul Harris with Eugene O’Donnell as co-driver won it in 2000.
Meanwhile, it was a double success for Donegal crews at the Stonethrower’s Rally. The Ardara based crew of Declan Gallagher and Ray Moore clinched Dunlop Modified Championship.
The combination came first in their Toyota Starlet while Donegal International winner Sam Moffett with James O’Reilly, in Mitsubishi Evo 1X, won the Group N section of the rally.
