Killybegs Regatta was held on Sunday last and was another huge success with up to a dozen clubs competing at the various level.
The main feature of the regatta was the skiff racing with up to 200 competitors competing in the eight different categories from U16 boys and girls up to senior ladies and senior mens.
“It was a huge success and there was a great interest from all the clubs and we had some very good skiff races,” said Deborah Bonner, one of the organisers of the Regatta.
Donegal Town, Burtonport and Inver topped the honours list at the end of a hectic day of the skiff racing competition with two first place finishes each.
Burtonport won the senior mens and the U-18 boys, Donegal Town, swept the boards at U-16 and U-18 girls while Inver Boys second team and Inver Ladies second team won the senior ladies race.
In all there were eight different categories - U-16 girls, U-16 boys, U-18 girls, U-18 boys, U-21 girls, U-21 boys, senior ladies and senior men.
Loughros won the U-16 boy and Killybegs were the clear winners of the U-18 girls.
“It was a fantastic day and we also had huge crowds turn up to watch the various races from the pier. There is a huge interest in skiff racing again in the last few years and that level of interest seems to be growing all the time.”
The Donegal Town Regatta is on this Sunday with the action to get under way from the pier at 2 pm with a series of skiff races and other water activities.
This weekend’s running of the Donegal Regatta is the second after it was revived two years ago.
