Stranorlar boxer Jason Quigley is guaranteed at least a bronze medal from the European boxing championships in Minsk following his quarter-final win over Stefan Hartel this afternoon.

The 22-year-old, who is competing in his first senior event, continued the Irish surge in Belarus with a unanimous points decision over No 4 seed, Germany’s Hartel 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

Current Irish Elite champion Quigley will now meet Olympian Ievgen Khytrove of the Ukraine in the last-four. Khytrov, the current AIBA world champion, is the No 1 seed in the 75kg class.

On Monday, Jason Quigley advanced in the middleweight division, with a unanimous win 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 over Austrian Arbi Chakaev.

Quigley is in good company with Irish Olympic medallists, bantamweight John Joe Nevin and Paddy Barnes also qualifying for the semi-finals today. Michael Conlan and Tommy McCarthy are scheduled to compete in their quarter-finals later today.
