Donegal boxing coach Peter O’Donnell and Donegal boxers Michael Gallagher and Ryan Greene are settling in to their Russian base this morning.

O’Donnell is the manager of the 13 man Irish team selected to represent Ireland at the prestigious tournament and training camp in Chastoozerye, in the Kurgen region of Russia.

The Irish team flew out from Dublin on Tuesday night and will spend the next three weeks at their Russian base before returning home on July 23rd.

“We are looking forward to the trip and taking part in the tournament. I’m pleased that I have two Donegal men in the team and they are excited about going on the training camp and competing in the Veles Cup,” said Peter O’Donnell before he departed on Tuesday night.

“The Veles Cup is a big international tournament. All the top young boxers from around the world take part and the competition is always pretty tough and it is a good opportunity and will be a great experience for all the boys.”

Sixteen-year-old Michael Gallagher, from Finn Valley ABC, a seven times Irish champion, will compete in the Youth I, 80 kg. He is just back from the European Youth Championships and a last 16 place there.

Ryan Greene is from Bridgend and boxes out of the Oak Leaf club in Derry. Ryan is 14 and will compete at Boy 4, 46kg.

The first eight days of the trip will be spent at the training camp, before moving into the competition proper for the last eight days.

Peter O’Donnell is the team manager along with Dubliners Billy McClean and Tony McDevitt from the Drimnagh Boxing Club.
