Last weekend we were blessed with some magnificent weather at Costa Del Dunfanaghy and we had some scores to match. The big competition of the week was the Brian McGinley Memorial GOY Stroke Competition played on Sunday. Cornie McMullan must have thought he was in with a good chance of first prize after coming home with a great score of 62 net. However, he was pipped by Declan Lynch of Strabane by the narrowest of margins. Declan also had a 62 net and managed to take first prize on a BOT.
In the Saturday Open 4BBB, the winners were Pat Bonner and Ml Dunne, narrowly beating Mal Johnson and Nigel Doherty into second.
The Wednesday Open was won by Owen Magee with a great score of 40 points. C McCallion was second with Niall Roarty in third. Phelim McGeady won the gross with 32 gross points.
Junior Golf: The standard of golf in the Senior Boys Section was of the highest quality this week. If it weren't for a slow start, Finn Dalton would have come out on top. He had 24 points on the back nine but this was only good enough for third place. James Sweeney was second with a great score of 38 points and also won shot of the day when he holed out from 100 yards for a great birdie on the fourteenth. The winner of the senior boys was Carlos O'Reilly with a tremendous score of 39 points. Carlos played some terrific golf and was thoroughly deserving of his win.
In the Juveniles Section, the winner and one of our most consistent golfers was Michael Dolan who won by two shots from Max Roarty. In the cadets section the winner and one of our newest recruits was Matthew Wilkinson. Matthew has come on in leaps and bounds since he started competition golf a few weeks ago and is definitely one to watch for the future. Shot of the day went to Caolan McFadden who hit a towering second shot onto the eighteenth leaving his ball 10 feet from the hole.

Team news: The Portsalon Minor League team travelled to Buncrana Golf Club on Saturday last for the return leg of the Donegal Minor League final. Going into the return leg, Portsalon trailed by three matches to two, and it was always going to be difficult task to overturn the first leg result. The Portsalon team got off to a dream start as Stuart Nicholl and Roger Whiteside were convincing winners. The remaining matches were all close and when Paul Armstrong and James Comiskey added a further match the result looked to be in the balance. The remaining matches were won by the home club and they were crowned champions. The Portsalon team Captain James Sandilands congratulated Buncrana on their victory and thanked all who represented Portsalon in this season's competition.
The return leg of the Donegal over 50’s final match will be staged at Letterkenny Golf Club on Sunday. Going into the match the result is evenly balanced at two and half matches each.

Ballybofey and Stranorlar
Apologies for lack of results this last few weeks. I had been invited to warmer climates, namely the Costa del Sol to see how the game was played over some of their top courses and let me tell you, one could get used to it quite quickly.
With a mixture of warm and cooler weather back here in the North West, we are still playing golf in large numbers at Ballybofey & Stranorlar Golf Club and the high scoring is a reflection of the excellent condition of the course itself. Well done to a involved.
The very popular outing to Cruit Golf Club took place last weekend and the Cruit Cup was won by Danny Bannigan.
Well done on your win Danny.
Congratulations to Barry Allan and William Laird who defeated Eamonn Foy and Freddie Wilson in the Phoenix Cup.

North Western Alliance
It was Strabane Golf Club member Kevin Keegan, playing in only his second Alliance, who topped the nett section in our outing to North West Golf Club on Saturday.
His 40 points, 19 on front nine with a ‘blank’ and 21 on the back nine, also with a ‘blank’, was sufficient to put him top of the leader board above Eugene Corry , a member of the Newtownstewart G.C. Ulster Cup team. Eugene’s runner-up spot was by virtue of B.O.T. from local member Mark Davis who would rue that double bogey at the par three Fairy [16th], where many players made ‘2’.
In the Gross section, Brian McElhinney [+3] was again the star of the show as he followed up his -4 round in Ballybofey /Stranorlar on the first outing with no less than six birdies at North West, his only blemish being a bogey at the newly constructed par four 4th hole. This misdemeanor led to a gross 65, five under par.
Michael McGeady [+2] returned a level par round 70 gross to finish in the runner- up slot.
The unluckiest player of the day was Letterkenny Golf Club member Eamonn Davis who was a reported two inches from an 'ace' [hole in one] at the Fairy [16th]. Having to settle for a birdie which, if his son Mark had recorded instead of double bogey, Mark would have won the competition instead of finishing in third place.
Full results: Nett: 1st. Kevin Keegan (19) Strabane G.C. 40pts; 2nd. Eugene Corry (10) Newtownstewart G.C. 38pts [b.o.t]; 3rd. Mark Davis (6) North West G.C. 38pts; 4th. Denis Porter (12) Strabane G.C. 36pts [b.o.t].
Gross: 1st. Brian Mc Elhinney (+3) North West G.C. 65; 2nd. Michael McGeady (+2) SDgolfacademy.com.70; 3rd. Brendan McCarroll snr (5) Ballyliffin G.C. 76; 4th Ronan MacLochlainn (7) North West G.C. 77.
The following players had ‘2’s: B.Whyte; N.McCrory; J.Harley; E.Davis; M.McGettigan; G.Harkin; D.Montgomery; G.MacLochlainn.
The next outing will take place at Narin/Portnoo Golf Club on Saturday, 22nd October.
Enquiries please tel. Barry on 087-2488181.
We had a late summer day in Cruit Island last Sunday when a large number of golfers enjoyed a super day's golf with almost perfect conditions.
Scoring was very good also, and six men got 40pts or better. Danny McShea was the most impressive with a winning score of 44 pts. Asssisted by his partner Jim O Donnell who had 42pts, they easily beat one of the hot favourite teams for our Winter League, in Gerard McElwee and Brendan Boyle.
Other winners in our Winter League were Frank and Eammon Kelly, Joseph and Declan Gillespie, Danny McGarvey and Terence Gallagher. Some very exciting Quarter Final matches in store.
