There was great success for two Donegal Jiu Jitsu competitors who took part in the European Championships in Rome at the weekend.
Convoy man TJ McMenamin claimed double gold in both his weight division and the open weight division at the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) No Gi championships.
This is where contestants don't wear the traditional martial art suit known as a gi in Japanese.
TJ, a seasoned international competitor in the master blue division, also took part in the Rome Open where the uniform was permitted, as a warm up for the main event.
Having secured double gold in the open event last Friday, he went on to the no-gi event on Sunday where he claimed two more golds in the medium heavy weight and open divisions, defeating an Italian in his division and a former world champion from Sweden in the open weight final.
TJ said he enjoyed a good run of results leading up to the event but his eye was on the European championships for some time.
"That's the one I wanted, the European win, as I was a bit disappointed with only getting bronze at the European Gi championships back in January" he stated.
McMemenain trains out of the Rilion Gracie Academy in Oldtown Letterkenny under Brian 'Barney' Coyle.
Donegal Town brown belt Bryan Gorman also took part in the event and secured a bronze in the Rome open as well as a silver in the European No Gi Championships after a some hard fought rounds.
Bryan runs and trains out of DT Fitness in Donegal Town.
